More than 830 rural women in Zambia’s Eastern Province are now self-sufficient thanks to a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)-funded project that promotes small and medium scale businesses. The women, who were previously unemployed and depended on their spouses and family for survival, can now access small loans to run and manage their own businesses.

8 December 2011, Lusaka – The Government of the Republic of Zambia and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have produced the sixth Human Development Report for Zambia. The 2011 Report focuses on agriculture, education, health and water and sanitation sectors and reveals what has been achieved in these areas due to the right policy, institutional and investment mix, and what gaps remain in order to raise the bar on access and quality of local service delivery.

5 December 2011, Choma – Today the first State of the World’s Volunteerism Report was launched by the Government of the Republic of Zambia, Ministry of Community Development and the United Nations. This report marks the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers. The Report challenges some of the dominant misperceptions associated with volunteerism: it is not only a charitable action for the rich but also widespread among the income poor. Both female and male volunteers contribute their time evenly to addressing development challenges of our time.
