Zambia to coordinate Africa's work at the Dublin Conference on Cluster Munitions
Lusaka 7th April 2008. Zambia has been appointed to coordinate Africa's work at the Dublin Conference on Cluster Munition in May 2008. This development came following a unanimous decision by 39 African countries which attended the just ended Livingstone Conference on Cluster Munitions. The conference outcome was the Livingstone Declaration which signified a strong African political stand against the use, development, stockpile or transfer of all cluster munitions which cause unacceptable harm to civilians. The Livingstone conference was supported by UNDP.

The first State of Human Rights in Zambia report launched
Lusaka 3rd April 2008. The Zambian Human Rights Commission has launched the State of Human Rights in Zambia 2007 report. The purpose of human rights reports is to advocate for policy and legislative reforms, monitor and report human rights and assess, monitor and evaluate the performance of government in the protection and promotion of human rights. This first report considers the State of Human Rights in Zambia with specific reference to human rights in the Fifth National Development Plan.

UNDP  Welcomes African Regional Conference on Cluster Munitions
Livingstone 31st March 2008. UNDP welcomes the opening of the African Regional Conference on Cluster Munitions in Livingstone today – an important step in the global process to ban cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians. An initiative of the Zambian government, the two-day conference unites African governments, international organizations and civil society groups from across the continent, rallying support for ongoing efforts to push forward an international treaty banning the most insidious forms of these weapons.

African Regional Conference on Cluster Munitions
Lusaka 14th March 2008. The Government of Zambia is hosting the African Regional Conference on Cluster Munitions in Livingstone 31st March - 1st April 2008. The conference is a major milestone in developing a new international instrument that will prohibit cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians. 
 
A Report on Kwacha Appreciation published
Lusaka 11th March 2008. This Report investigates the impact of the exchange rate appreciation on the Zambian economy to determine whether a policy response is required. The Report specifically looks at the impact of the Kwacha appreciation on trade revenue, Official Development Assistance (ODA) and debt repayments and servicing during 2005 and 2006. The findings show a loss of $197 million on trade and $218 million on ODA but a gain of $262 million on debt.

Presentation: UNDP, climate change and Zambia
Lusaka 6th March 2008. UNDP leads the international support to climate change actions in Zambia. To date it has helped develop a national capacity self-assessment, a national action plan of adaptation, initiate work on the clean development mechanism, as well as set in motion a path-breaking analytical work on the economic impacts of climate change.

Languages Matter!
Lusaka 21st February 2008. International Mother Language Day was celebrated at the University of Zambia Chapel under the theme “Languages matter”. This was the first time when Zambia National Commission for UNESCO, UNIC and UNDP organized a joint Mother Language Day event.

The UN System in Zambia Mourns Algiers Bombing Victims 
Lusaka 3rd January 2008. The United Nations will be holding a Non-denominational Memorial Service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross tomorrow Friday 4th January 2008 in honour of UN staff that perished in the Algiers bombing last December 11, 2007.  A total 18 staff members of the UN were killed in the suicide vehicle bomb attack of the UN office buildings in Algiers.
 
Developed countries must cut emissions, invest in adaptation to prevent human development reversals
27/11/2007. Wealthy countries’ carbon footprint threatens to stamp out progress in Africa, but the 2007/2008 Human Development Report proposes a way forward.
 
UNDP’s Macroeconomic modeling workshop aims to
strengthen pro-poor policies in sub-Saharan Africa

Lusaka 2/11/2007. 150 participants from nearly 30 countries participated in a workshop on Macroeconomic Analysis and Programming for MDG-based Planning in Africa. The main objective of the workshop was to strengthen the foundation laid for MDG-based planning processes in African countries on the issues of pro-poor policies and macroeconomic modeling. The workshop was sponsored by the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa and organized in conjunction with UNDESA and UNDP Zambia.
